How I Clean Up My Mac's Storage
For me, the "System Data" category in Mac storage has always been a source of frustration. I've always scrolled through countless Reddit threads, each suggesting different tools, methods, techniques, and terminal commands to clear it out.
So, I decided to share my current flow and what works for me:
DaisyDisk
DaisyDisk displays my storage as an interactive map, helping me locate large files and old folders I might have forgotten about or those left behind by apps. It clearly shows what’s consuming space, allowing me to decide what to delete.
Here’s why it works for me:
- Fast disk scanning (noticeably quicker than other tools)
- Visual map for easy navigation and file removal
- Built-in algorithm to tell me what’s safe to delete and what’s not
- One-time purchase (affordable, especially with student pricing)
It’s an excellent tool for understanding storage allocation.
Pearcleaner
I also use Pearcleaner, an open-source tool that fits my needs perfectly.
Key features:
- Thorough app uninstallation, including residual system files
- Development cleanup (containers, simulator assets, etc.)
- Basic maintenance (clearing caches, logs, and leftovers)
Being open-source, I can verify its actions, and it runs only on demand—no background processes.
Why Not CleanMyMac?
CleanMyMac is popular, and I used it extensively in the past. While it offers comprehensive cleaning, I found its constant background processes and notifications slowing my Mac down. I prefer tools that are light and I can run manually rather than those that monitor my system continuously. It’s still a great tool, just not the right fit for my workflow anymore.
Caution
A few rules I follow:
- Never delete anything unless I’m 100% certain of its purpose.
- Always avoid system files and folders unless I know what they are.
- Have my photos, videos and important files always backed up on iCloud.
My Workflow
- DaisyDisk: Identify and remove large files, caches, and logs.
- Pearcleaner: General system cleanup.
- Organized folders: Keep Desktop, Documents, and Downloads minimal.
- Empty Trash habitually: I can’t stand clutter, even in the Trash.
That’s my simple, effective way to keep my Mac’s storage clean. I hope it helps you too!
